Loutolim village is literally in the heart of Goa, in the Taluka of Salcette, South Goa. An ancient Brahmin village, predating by hundreds of years the Portuguese Era (1510-1961), it is justifiably described as one of Goa’s most beautiful and historic villages.
Only 20 minutes from the coast, less than an hour from the capital Panjim, and 20 minutes both from Ponda with its surrounding temples and spice plantations, and Margao, the bustling commercial centre of the South, Loutolim could not be better placed for exploring the whole of Southern and Central Goa – not just the coastal areas but also the extraordinarily beautiful hinterland.
Nestling in the foothills of the Western Ghats, surrounded by forest and jungle, the small ward of Orgao is a 1.3km (well under a mile) stroll from the magnificent Saviour of the World Church in the village centre. Tucked into a quiet corner of Orgao, at the end of a no through road, you will find Casa Susegad.
Life continues on around the Casa as it has done for many decades, unspoilt by the trappings and distractions of mass tourism. There are no nightclubs, the nights are still dark and silent, and restaurants, though close, need a taxi rather than shoes to get to them.
If you are visiting Casa Susegad for the first time, you will probably need instructions for the last mile…
Loutolim village has two ‘landmarks’ – Bigfoot (tourist attraction of Goan Life) and the rather majestic church at the other end of the village. If you are hard against the front left corner of the church, there is a little lane on the other side of the road which is signposted ‘Pilar Sisters’ and ‘Don Bosco’. Take this lane as far as the Pilar Sisters (a big two-storey white mansion on your right) where you will be tempted to take the right hand road to Don Bosco. Don’t! Stay left and continue round a couple of corners and you’ll be passing a row of four Indo-Portuguese Casas on your left in various states of repair. Casa Susegad is the last and largest of these, painted Jodhpur blue. The dogs will no-doubt race loudly to the gate to meet you and one of the staff will arrive shortly after them to open the gates and greet you properly!
